Wildfires: Shades of Gray

November 15, 2016

Thank you all for keeping in touch and checking in on us!  We so appreciate your concern!  We'll keep you updated as often as we are able!

Early a.m.:

Well, I don't like to be the bearer of glum news, but things are pretty freaking serious here this morning in WNC, with many thousands of acres of forest are already burned/burning around our neck of the woods. The closest wildfire is several miles away, but we're ready to bolt if need be.  According to the news on tv, there are more forest fires starting in the Appalachians surrounding us.   This is the worst rash of wildfires seen in decades.

later .... 9 a.m.:

Wildfires are still sizzling in the crispy woods of  the Appalachians; the smoky haze of the fire surrounds us here at the Park and in the distance.  Billows of smoke cascading down the nearby mountains are visible this morning, waves of gray.  Photos don't show how it really is, so I have no photos right now.  From here, it's just a gray fog out there. I don't dare get any closer, the roads up closer to the mountains and are mostly shut off anyway. They have work to do. They don't need tourists.

Due to the smoke, air quality alerts are frequently announced on the news;  people here are complaining of problems with sore throats, burning eyes, sneezing, coughing.  I can't imagine what the fire fighters are going through.  I just cannot imagine.  They are total heroes, ya'll.  I pray they all get out safely.  We're holed up inside the ole dependable Spam Can (Hula Girl) and staying safe. My eyes have been burning for days.  I'll get over it.

Over 5,000 crews from across the US, along with multiple aircraft, are here to assist the 1,000 fire fighters already battling the blazes, but the brittle, blowing leaves and lack of rain are hampering their war on the flames in the bone dry forests.  New, smaller fires ignite daily.  The tv news says some of these fires in The Appalachians have the ability to smolder for months, they may perhaps continue until March.  Gasp.  I hope and pray the wildlife has been able to escape.

Later Still:

Several counties (a quarter of the state of NC) have declared a state of emergency.  Other states involved (TN, AB, GA, VA, SC and KY) are also in the same position, have also declared a state of emergency and saving people and structures is the main goal of the crews as evacuation orders increase.  Tens of thousands of acres are involved.  As the drought increases with warm temps and the breezes pick up, the fires multiply. But still, people here are calm, we are wrapped in a safety net of highways and city limits.  The main fires are a few miles away.

Thankfully, we feel pretty safe here.  Sorry Zu, short walks again today, girlfriend. It's simply not a healthy idea to go for a long walk.  Good thing Zuma likes watching Dog TV and Animal Planet whilst lounging on the king size bed in our motorhome (Hula Girl) with room service provided at the snap of her paws. Personally, I'm not a big tv watcher but we keep it softly blaring in the background most of the time to keep up with news updates, emergency alerts, etc.

Zuma is handling being  here with me in a small space really really well.  Normally, she can lay outside in the sunshine but it's not a safe place for her to be this week.  She just goes with the flow. Whatever.  Danes are known for enjoying the lazy life of lounging. Like all Danes, Zuma is masterful at this task.  Bed Lounging.  Yeh, they got that.

Once this weather improves, we'll be back onto our regular schedule.  That's the least of our worries right now. I just hope the people battling these fires will be safe.

Sadly, three arrests have been made in KY and TN:  arsonists. WHY anyone would do such a thing, threaten this miraculous landscape, is incomprehensible to me.  We were drawn here by the mountains, the wildlife.  Now it is all at risk and it's a heartbreaker.
It's difficult to guage the devastation:  thousands of acres are ablaze.

The RV Park is half full now, people who planned their Fall vacation are leaving.  Nothing to see, except smoke.  I'm so incredibly thankful we've had the privilege of seeing the mountains in their splendor, and not as charred remains.  We will probably go further south on our trek to Santa Fe at the end of the month.

A Ray of Hope:

In the middle of the night I got up and peeked outside and there was the Supermoon, floating amidst a cloud of misty smog.  With al the fog, I didn't expect to see this wondrous sight.  But there it was.  I take this as a sign of hope, the fires are being conquered, the heavy cloak of smoke has subsided this morning so the mountains are now visible for the first time in several days, but it's a little further away now. The haze persists.  Last night we had our first frost.  Maybe that will help in the higher elevations.  Thank you for following our blog and thank you to everyone who has reached out to us to make sure we're safe.

We're Heading to Santa Fe!

November 11, 2016

Remembering all the Veterans today.  Both my parents served in the army, Doug's Dad was in the Navy.  Thinking of them all today.  And every day.

We're heading SW to Santa Fe, New Mexico at the end of the month!  Along this journey, we've thoroughly enjoyed the east coast ocean life,

Island life,

the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee,

The trails,

city life,

RV Park life,

and now we yearn to explore the desert landscape.  Nah, it's not like we're gonna trudge off into the sand dunes with scorpions in the toes of our shoes and rattlesnakes hissing at our heels (I hope), we're just gonna stop by Nashville and some other small places we've researched, then hang out in Santa Fe for a while, trek along Route 66 for Emma's sake, then .... ?

Gypsies, man, gypsies.

Yappy Neighbors

November 11, 2016

This has never happened before.  We've always been blessed with good neighbors.  Great neighbors.  But, for the past few days, we've had two small, fluffy nasty yappy uncontrolled dogs next door.
Poor things, they're probably stressed out.  Me too.

Despite their minute sizes, they can blast out a horrible, unending pattern of yipping hysteria that puts me on edge.  Seriously, They are awful. The owners must be deaf.  They sit in their lawn chairs and don't even seem to notice that their fluffy little CUJO impersonators are annoying the whole Park.  Every time we walk in or out of Hula Girl, whenever friends stop by to visit or when people walk past here, these dogs go off like a cacophony of canine car bombs.

This morning, I even started barking.  The deep woof that spouted from my throat scared me and I hastily ran inside and retreated to the bed.  (Ahhhh, Animal Planet, please?).  I only let out a bark every 30 days or so, just to remember that I'm actually a dog. But this is different. These yippy dudes next door are putting me on the Bus to Crazyland.  They're Punks in the Dog World.

For five long days we haven't been able to enter or exit Hula Girl or have guests without these dogs going totally bananas, twirling in airborne Cirque de Soleil-like acrobatics at the end of their leashes, frantically opposing our presence.  Anyone who walks by is rociously snarled at.  The owners sit in their lawn chairs, serenely reading their books and do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

My neighborhood friends stopped by and asked us how we can even stand it.
We didn't want to be whiny neighbors so we just shut up and put up.

This afternoon, the woman at the office went to talk with the owners, who do nothing to control the continuous barking.  She could barely hold a conversation with them, she said, because the little dogs were barking and snarling at her the whole time.  She advised them the Park people are complaining.  I don't think my People would allow me to yip and snarl for hours, read their books and pretend it's not happening like our neighbors do.  Thankfully, after a trip to the office, we learned that the dogs will now be housed.

Oh, the perils of dog travel.

Dog Unfriendly vs. Dog Friendly.

November 10th, 2016

Zuma is writing the blog again today ....

                          Displaying IMG_0457.JPG

It's not all fluff and flowers traveling with me, an XL dawg.  We plan our travels around which restaurants, hotels and events will accept me/us.  My People are opposed to leaving me in the hotel room /camper so I always go with them.  It's a package deal.  It's about traveling with a big dawg.

Some hotels have weight/breed/size restrictions.  But they usually let me stay anyway because I don't bark or stay in the hotel room alone.  So far, my People are well-behaved in public, as am I and we haven't been kicked out of anywhere to date.  With a little research, we're able to figure out where to go, where dogs are welcome.   We're not welcome everywhere.  Yet.  So we work around it.  Believe me, there are far bigger problems in the world.

Maybe they just mean No Pointers? Or no Setters?

Along our travels, we've been blessed to find a multitude of dog-friendly places to dine, shop, even lounge in an elegant uptown bookstore, Battery Park Book Exchange and Champagne Bar in Asheville.  This a very dog-friendly city.

Iiii know!  Pretty amazing to think we dogs
are allowed to lounge here, Mimosa in paws.

I understand the reasons dogs are not allowed into some venues.

We have been told, "Some dog owners are better dog owners than others".  Yeh, I get that.  I wondered why they were collecting my droppings.  I thought She was making a wreath or something.  I'm not hard to get along with.  Several local restaurants know me by name and bring me a fresh bowl of water and dog cookies.   There are lots of selfies.  I think that's a blast.

Three Dogs (dog) Bakery Welcomes dogs.
Best.peanut.butter.cookies.ever.
They give me samples when we go in.

Most places we want to go (shops, restaurants, the breweries) are SUPER Dog-Friendly here in WNC, SC and TN.  If a restaurant serves food, we can dine on the patio.

So, I just want to say a great big thank you to all the great places who welcome K-9s!  It sure makes traveling with me easier!

Speaking of welcoming canines, can I get on the bed now?

The Graduate!

November 9, 2016

Recently, Zuma and I have been working on achieving our Therapy Dog Team Certification through Pet Partners, a national company that registers Therapy and Service Dogs.  On October 30, we took our final test and we graduated!  I'm so proud of Zuma, she did really well.  She is a kindly soul.

The complete testing process requires:

* Handler Certification:  I took a several-hours-long course on line,    followed by an on line test.  I learned a lot.
* Animal Health Screening (thorough physical exam).
* Vaccinations up to date.
* Team Evaluation:  we had to work together through a variety of        obedience tasks, obstacles and situations and were judged                separately, the dog and the handler.

I'm really impressed with the organizations who provide this service.  Our whole experience was very positive with Pet Partners.

Now, Zu and I are looking forward to our first visit.  Here she is with our Tester, Phil, who commented that Zu will be a good Therapy dog:

A Clean Mouth

November 9, 2016

I'm going to spare you my dirty mouth election talk.
You're welcome.

WTH were you thinking, America?  Okay, I'm done.

Instead, I'm going to utterly astound you with news that I had my teeth cleaned the other day.  This will fascinate you and take your mind off the potential downfall of our country.

                            Displaying IMG_2517.JPG

Dr. Pisani and his technician, Tabitha (Crossroads Mobile Ceterinary Clinic) picked me up in their mobile ambulance, cleaned my teeth and brought me home.  I suspect there was some form of happy drugs involved.  Apparently, I'm a bit of a lightweight for anaesthesia.  I was feeling a tad woozy for a while so I just crashed outside when I got home.  Sometimes sleeping it off is the best solution.  Even if you have to use the driveway for a pillow and leaves for bedding.
Yep.  Pity Party in full swing.  I can't make it to the air mattress.

When it came time for dinner I was still a little wobbly. Those stairs were looking pretty challenging.  I hadn't noticed before that there were two sets of stairs.

                      Displaying IMG_2520.JPG

A couple of hours later, with a little help from my friend, I got my bootie inside Hula Girl (our motorhome), ate a small dinner and flopped on the bed to watch my fave show, Animal Planet.

It was well worthwhile to have my teeth cleaned and I'm glad to have had it done.
My people trust Dr. Pisani and Tabitha.

And now I don't feel like I have sweaters on my teeth!
