Since Doug returned to NC last week we've been going off on day trips and have found some lovely places, among these discoveries, the beautiful "Lake Lure Flowering Bridge".
The historic Rocky Broad River Bridge was closed to traffic in 2011 and was going to be torn down, but an active group of dedicated local gardeners decided to dig in and utilize the 155' crossing by creating a magnificent garden for all to enjoy.
The Friends of the Lake Lure Bridge officially dedicated this lovely garden to the public in October, 2013; their mission has been to create "A Gateway to Somewhere Beautiful". Mission accomplished.
The Rocky Broad River Bridge is an architectural work of art in itself:
With the well-designed plantings and seats to rest, it's a very special place to visit.
It's not only people-friendly, it's also extremely dog-friendly. Despite meandering through with a dog the size of a baby hippopotamus, we were all welcomed with open arms by the delightful two volunteers who were working in the hot sun that day. This gentleman shared the story of the bridge with us. There is only one other Flowering Bridge in the U.S.
This lovely lady took a break from her chores to ensure Zuma had a clean bowl of fresh cool water. We were deeply touched by their genuine hospitality.
Donations are accepted and all labor (except for the construction of the paths) is volunteer.
There are over 1,000 varieties of plants and trees, many of them native to NC; nestled between the mountains, with the river flowing through, the bridge and it's flora are surrounded by good karma.
Throughout the gardens are vignettes, all exhibiting a variety of themes.
One of the themes is "Hats Off To Our Gardeners", with flowers peeking out of or tumbling gaily from hats of all descriptions.
This is a very special place. There is an aura about it that gives you an amazing sense of peace and calm in these troubled times. The Flowering Bridge is an example of Community Spirit at its finest.
